Houston Dynamo striker Erick “Cubo” Torres scored in his second straight match as the Mexico U-23s defeated Liga MX club Pumas 2-1 in a pre-Olympic friendly on Tuesday.
Torres latched onto a rebound and fired home in the 51st minute for what would prove to be the game-winning goal. The 23-year-old, who was named to Mexico’s preliminary Olympic roster earlier this month, also scored in Mexico’s 4-2 win over Club America on Saturday.
Torres, who went the full 90 against Pumas, did not play in Mexico’s friendly against Toluca on Wednesday morning. The team will continue their preparations for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games on Saturday, when they’ll take on Nigeria in a friendly in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The reigning Olympic champions, Mexico were drawn into Group C with Germany, South Korea and Fiji for the Rio games. They’ll kick off the Olympics on August 4 against Germany in Salvador, Brazil. Eighteen of the 24 players at the Mexico U-23 camp will be named to the final Olympic roster; they’ll be joined in Rio by three overage players.
Torres, who has one assist and no goals in seven appearances with the Dynamo this year, has been in camp with the Mexico U-23s since June 13. He’ll return to Houston after this weekend.
