Andrew Wenger has called time on his career as a professional soccer player.
The seven-year MLS veteran, who was selected No. 1 overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, announced his retirement on his Instagram account Friday afternoon.
"It has been a blast, but my time on the field has come to an end," he wrote. "I am forever indebted to my family, friends, coaches, staff and teammates for the support they have given me over the course of this journey."
Wenger most recently suited up for Houston, where he made 76 regular season appearances with the Dynamo in three years, netting 10 goals and chipping in six assists. Committed to philanthropic work off the field, he also joined forces with The Forge for Families in Houston's Third Ward to run his First Pass Initiative, which introduces kids to soccer and helps them improve on the field and in the classroom.
Beginning his career in Montreal, Wenger played two full seasons with the Impact before being traded to the Philadelphia Union in 2014. The Pennsylvania native was also a Hermann Trophy winner at Duke University in 2011, scoring 17 goals as a forward.
“We’d like to thank Andrew for his hard work, dedication and commitment, both on and off the field, since joining the Houston Dynamo,” said Dynamo GM Matt Jordan in a club statement. “He has always been a top-class professional and we wish him nothing but the best in the next stage of his career.”
