Houston Dynamo 2, Sporting Kansas City 1 | 2020 MLS Match Recap

After a short weather delay at BBVA Stadium, the Houston Dynamo came from behind to beat Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City 2-1, extending Houston's unbeaten streak to five games.

It was a slow start for both sides and the Dynamo's best chance of the first half came in the 19th minute when Darwin Quintero had a one-on-one shot against Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia, who made the save.

In the 30th minute, SKC built up play from the back, making their way from one end of the pitch to the other until Khiry Shelton took a left-footed shot from about 10 yards out and forced a save from Dynamo’s Marko Maric. Maric tried to push it out wide, but Erik Hurtado was there to clean up the rebound and put away his second goal of 2020.

On the hour mark Alberth Elis subbed in for Houston and just one minute later, he got on the receiving end of a cross from Darwin Cerén to level things up 1-1. As the game was winding down, Mauro Manotas came up with a goal—this time five minutes after he subbed into the game—to give Houston a lead they would not give up.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: With the Seattle Sounders hot on their heels in the standings, Sporting Kansas City really needed three points tonight to stay at the top of the Western Conference and now that's up in the air. Houston, on the other hand, have been playing well in their past few games and extend their unbeaten streak to five games, including a three-game win streak.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Houston Dynamo’s Alberth Elis subbed in and immediately made an impact by scoring his side’s first goal of the night.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Alberth Elis scored the game-tying goal just one minute after subbing in, shifting the momentum and helping his side to the eventual win.
