Roman Torres - celebrates Panama's qualification for the World Cup - Seattle Sounders

Just hours after helping the Seattle Soundersadvance past the Vancouver Whitecaps and into the Western Conference Championship series, Sounders defender Roman Torres was being honored in his native Panama for leading the country to their first-ever appearance at a World Cup.

Torres, who scored the decisive goal that secured Panama’s berth in the 2018 World Cup in their CONCACAF Hexagonal finale, was back in his home country as part of Fiestas Patrias, a series of celebrations commemorating Panama’s independence.

Torres, who may have a stadium named after him in his home country, will have the next couple of days off before the Sounders return to training. Seattle will face the winner of the Portland-Houston Western Conference semifinal series in the Western Conference Championship beginning on Nov. 21.
