Jozy Altidore's remarks on teammate Michael Bradley's knee injury and resulting surgery have the club considering a move away for their marquee striker, according to ESPN's Herculez Gomez.
Via Twitter, Gomez reported Wednesday that Toronto FC may be shopping Altidore after earlier this week he publicly criticized the club's handling of Bradley's injury. In disclosing Bradley's injury, Toronto revealed he had sustained it in the 2019 MLS Cup, but that surgery was deemed necessary after an initial attempt at rehabbing the injury.
Bradley is expected to miss four months recovering from the procedure, which means a return could come in late May or even June.
Toronto and Altidore agreed last February to a contract extension through 2022 that would appear to make the forward difficult to move, with a 2019 base salary of just under $4.9 million and annual guaranteed compensation of just over $6.3 million, according to figures provided by the MLS Players Union.
Altidore also referenced his own injury issues in his criticism of the club. The 30-year-old has missed portions of all five of his previous seasons in Toronto, starting only 54% of the club's regular season matches and playing 53% of the minutes available.
Despite that, with 56 MLS goals, Altidore is Toronto's second all-time leading MLS scorer behind Sebastian Giovinco. He also owns the game-winning goal in Toronto's 2-0 2017 MLS Cup triumph over Seattle, their only win in three MLS Cup appearances, all against the Sounders.
