FC Dallas defeated Minnesota United FC5-3 on Saturday courtesy of a late brace from Homegrown midfielder Brandon Servania, but after the game a red-card incident overshadowed the entertainment on display.
Minnesota forward Mason Toye picked up a red card in the 96th minute, with sideline reporter Jamie Watson reporting on the Minnesota broadcast that the 20-year-old spit on FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon, per the fourth official.
"The coaches apologized to me," Cannon explained to reporters after the match, as reported by Pro Soccer USA's Arman Kafai. "I'm sure Mason Toye will apologize to me later on social media. I looked down and he loogied-up and spit on me."
Cannon was not happy about receiving a yellow card for temporarily removing his jersey to try and clean it up.
"I wasn't angry – well obviously, I was angry but I wasn't fighting with the refs," Cannon said. "No, I got spit on. It was snot and everything on my shirt, so I took it off to wipe it off."
Toye walked off the field without protest after seeing his marching orders. Minnesota head coach Adrian Heath responded to hearing about the incident with tough words for his player.
“Well, we won’t have [Toye] for the next game and I don’t know," Heath said. "Certainly I haven’t seen it. But if he has spat at him, then he deserves everything he gets. Certainly I won’t condone that type of behavior. If he spat at him, then he’ll get what he deserves.”
Toye, picked seventh overall in the 2018 SuperDraft out of Indiana University, has enjoyed a breakout season of sorts up until now. He has four goals and three assists through nine league games, plus another two tallies in the U.S. Open Cup.
