The top spot in Group B is on the line when already advancing Haiti and Costa Rica square off at Red Bull Arena in the final match of the group Monday night. Both teams won each of their first two matches in the group, both defeating debutant Bermuda, and Nicaragua.
This is the third all-time meeting in the Gold Cup with Costa Rica winning, 2-1, in the 2002 quarterfinals followed by a 1-1 draw in the 2007 group stage.
Haiti
After opening the Gold Cup rallying for a 2-1 win over Bermuda, Haiti clinched a berth in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Nicaragua Thursday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco.
Haiti struck first in the 22nd minute on a deflected strike by Steeven Saba and made it 2-0 12 minutes later on an own goal by Manuel Rosas after New York Red Bulls midfielder Derrick Etienne did all the work in the box to put a shot toward the net.
Costa Rica
Bermuda didn't make it easy, but Costa Rica pulled out a 2-1 win to reach the quarterfinals Thursday night.
Mayron George opened the scoring for the Ticos with his first international goal on the half-hour mark, slotting in a rebound, and Elias Aguilar doubled the lead in the 54th minute. The Gombey Warriors kept fighting and cut their deficit in half on a Nahki Wells penalty kick five minutes later. George nearly had his brace in second-half stoppage time, but Bermuda goalkeeper Dale Eve made a stunning save.
