D.C. United legend Jaime Moreno suffered a freak accident while on the golf course last Thursday, requiring a lengthy reconstructive eye surgery which might not prevent him from losing sight in that eye.
The Washington Post's Steven Goff spoke to the MLS legend and Moreno explained to Telemundo 44 in Washington (below) that he "played the ball quickly and the next thing I knew I was on the ground bleeding."
D.C. United supporters immediately reacted to the news, with the Screaming Eagles donating 100 percent of their store proceeds to Moreno and a Barra Brava founder, Oscar Zambrana, creating a GoFundMe page to support Moreno. Zambrana and the Washington Post report both indicated that Moreno doesn't currently have health insurance to help cover the medical costs, including potential surgeries that lie ahead.
The GoFoundMe aims to raise $40,000 and had surpassed $30,000 as of publishing. You can donate here.
Moreno is fourth on the all-time MLS goals leaderboard, tallying 133 times (alongside 102 assists) while playing in MLS from the inaugural 1996 season through his retirement in 2010. Moreno spent all but 11 of his 340 MLS appearances with D.C., featuring only briefly with the NY/NJ MetrosStars after a 2003 season trade.
Moreno, 46, also appeared 75 times for his home country of Bolivia. His time with the Black and Red included four MLS Cup titles, four Supporters’ Shields and two U.S. Open Cup championships. Quite simply, he’s one of the best-ever forwards in MLS history.
