The rumors of recent days became official on Thursday as Frank Lampard was named manager of English club Chelsea FC, a club he led to three Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy during more than a decade with the Blues.
Lampard, who played two seasons with New York City FC in MLS (2015-2016), will be taking over a club with two Americans on its books: New York Red Bulls academy product Matt Miazga and Christian Pulisic, both of whom are currently with the US national team in the Concacaf Gold Cup.
After formally retiring in February 2017, Lampard moved into the coaching ranks and this past season helped Derby County to the playoffs in the English second tier, falling just short of promotion to the English Premier League.
Lampard joined NYCFC for its inaugural MLS season in 2015 and scored 15 goals in 29 total appearances for the Cityzens. He led the club to the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2016, appearing in both legs of an Eastern Conference playoff series loss to Toronto FC.
