TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
FC Dallas and defender Reggie Cannon have agreed to a four-year contract extension, the club announced Thursday.
Cannon, 21, graduated from the Dallas academy and made his debut in 2017. Over the last two seasons, he has been an integral member of the starting XI, making a total of 63 appearances with the club. He has also become a regular for the US national team, with 11 caps already to his name.
“We’re happy for Reggie,” FC Dallas president Dan Hunt said in a club statement. “He means so much to our club and has a bright future ahead of him. As he continues to grow with FC Dallas and the U.S. Men’s National Team program, he has become one of the top young talents in MLS.”
Cannon won back-to-back U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Championships with the Under-16/17 academy team in 2015-16 and spent one year at UCLA.
“I’m thrilled about this opportunity,” said Cannon. “My focus is to continue developing as a player and help FC Dallas be the best team in MLS.”
The 21-year-old is regularly tipped as one of the next MLSers to move abroad, with a number of European clubs circling for his signature. Hunt acknowledged that possibility in an interview with MLSsoccer.com's Charles Boehm.
"He is a fantastic young man, both on and off the field, he is really special," Hunt said. "And at some point you know he may go to Europe. I can't tell you when that will happen, or he may play his whole career here, you never know. It's a collaboration with players. You have to work with the player and get them on the path that they want to be on.”
