Callum Montgomery has his goals departmentalized, from short-term to long-term and those in between.
The young center back wants to break in with FC Dallas, the team that selected him fourth overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. And there’s aspirations to also become a regular starter for the Canadian national team.
“I definitely have the 2026 World Cup circled as one of my long term goals,” Montgomery told Waking the Red. “I want to be in the squad and starting, but that’s a long way away and so for me right now I just need to start cracking the Dallas lineup and contributing.”
Matt Doyle projects the 23-year-old from British Columbia to be part of John Herdman’s squad at the 2022 World Cup — that is, of course, if the Canadians qualify.
Doyle suggests Montgomery, who was named to Canada’s U-23 Olympic qualifying team, would lock down his starting spot midway through 2021 in that scenario. For now, the 6-foot-3 defender is hoping for some minutes with FC Dallas after earning Man of the Match honors for San Antonio FC in his first appearance with the USL squad on March 7.
