Former New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch and his Red Bull Salzburg side had a tough task in front of them in their UEFA Champions League group stage matchup against reigning champs Bayern Munich on Tuesday, and they put themselves in position to get a result with a second-half equalizer.
Unfortunately for Marsch & Co., it all unraveled after that as RB Salzburg conceded four times in the final 11 minutes in an eventual 6-2 defeat, keeping them in last place in Group A.
The match got off to an ideal start for Salzburg, who got the opening goal in just the 4th minute.
They would fall behind 2-1 after a 21st-minute penalty kick from Robert Lewandowski and an own goal, but a 66th-minute leveler from Masaya Okugawa put Salzburg right back in it at 2-2.
But Salzburg collapsed late, with Bayern's Jerome Boateng scoring in the 79th minute to kick off the late four-goal barrage from the German giants to turn the hotly contested match into an emphatic victory.
Former Vancouver Whitecaps star Alphonso Davies remained out for Bayern in this contest with an ankle injury, while FC Dallas product Chris Richards was not in the matchday squad for the German and European champs.
Elsewhere in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, former Columbus Crew SC goalkeeper Zack Steffen was on the bench as the No. 2 backstop behind Ederson for Manchester City's 3-0 victory over Olympiacos.
