A former Seattle Sounder is headed to Liga MX, with Chivas Guadalajara announcing Friday that they had signed defender Tony Alfaro.
Alfaro joins Chivas after three seasons in Rave Green, where he made 25 appearances (12 starts). He was selected 27th overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, and was part of the squad that lifted the MLS Cup in 2016, though he didn't make any playoff appearances. The Sounders declined Alfaro's contract option following the conclusion of their 2018 campaign.
The Los Angeles native had reportedly been on the radar of Chivas throughout the year. His new club and former club met in March in the 2018 Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals, with Chivas taking a 3-1 aggregate win en route to the title, though Alfaro did not make the gameday squad for either match of the two-legged series.
Alfaro is the second MLSer to head south this offseason, after Orlando City on Thursday transferred midfielder Yoshi Yotun to Cruz Azul for a reported fee of $4 million. Head coach Oscar Pareja also left FC Dallas at the end of 2018 to take over at Club Tijuana, and is rumored to be interested in bringing over a few of his former players as well.
