Erick “Cubo” Torres’ rough year continued on Tuesday night, when the 23-year-old striker suffered a sprained MCL and heard jeers from the Cruz Azul crowd in their 1-0 loss to Toluca.
The Houston Dynamo confirmed on Thursday that their loanee suffered a Grade II MCL sprain and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks of action. If that proves to be the case, it would put him out for most of the rest of the Liga MX Apertura campaign, after which point his loan will end.
Torres has played 43 minutes in three appearances with Cruz Azul. He subbed on in the second half of Tuesday’s match, and his injury left Cruz Azul – who had already used all three of their subs – with just 10 men.
Torres, 23, was loaned to Cruz Azul by the Dynamo last month after failing to score a single goal in 22 appearances over parts of two seasons with Houston. The Mexican youth international signed with the Dynamo to major fanfare in December 2014, when he joined the club as a Designated Player following a standout season-and-a-half with Chivas USA.
Cruz Azul have a $2.5-million option to secure Torres’ permanent rights at the end of the loan.
