Chivas USA striker Erick “Cubo” Torres will get another shot with the Mexican national team when El Tri take on two CONCACAF foes next month in Mexico.
Torres was one of five players from clubs based outside of Mexico named on Monday by head coach Miguel Herrera to the roster for matchups against Honduras (Oct. 9 in Chiapas) and Panama (Oct. 12 in Querétaro). Real Madrid striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Málaga goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa were also among those called.
Torres, 21, made his Mexico debut earlier this month in the team’s 1-0 win over Bolivia in Denver. He started and logged a full 90 minutes in the win for El Tri, drawing rave reviews from Herrera.
Torres has scored 14 goals this season for Chivas USA, but he has not played for the club since he was ejected for a straight red card during the team’s 3-0 loss to the LA Galaxy on Aug. 31. He was subsequently handed an additional one-game suspension by the MLS Disciplinary Committee, which he served during the team’s loss at Toronto FC on Sunday.
Torres is expected to return to the Chivas lineup when the Goats take on Seattle at CenturyLink Field this Saturday.
