For the third straight Gold Cup, El Salvador and Jamaica square off, with the winner Friday night at BBVA Stadium in Houston topping Group C and booking a spot in the quarterfinals.
The Reggae Boyz have won three of the four previous Gold Cup meetings, but El Salvador prevailed, 2-0, in Concacaf Nations League qualifying in March.
El Salvador
In the first Gold Cup game played in the Caribbean, El Salvador defeated Curacao, 1-0, Monday at the National Stadium in Kingston. Nelson Bonilla scored the lone goal in first-half stoppage time.
Back in Nations League qualifiers in March, Bonilla also scored four minutes into the second half and Damion Lowe's own goal five minutes from full time secured a 2-0 win over Jamaica at Estadio Cuscatlan.
Jamaica
All eyes were on Leon Bailey for his much-anticipated Jamaica debut, but it was veteran Dever Orgill who stole the show. The 29-year-old forward struck for a pair of first-half goals to pace the Reggae Boyz to a 3-2 win over Honduras in a Concacaf Gold Cup Group C opener Monday night at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Two minutes after Choco Lozano pulled Honduras to within a goal, Lowe latched onto a Peter-Lee Vassell corner kick and powerfully headed in from the edge of the six-yard box. Los Catrachos added a stoppage time goal to make the Reggae Boyz sweat out the final few moments.
