Ecuador, FC Dallas midfielder Carlos Gruezo's Copa America status in doubt

FC Dallas and Ecuador midfielder Carlos Gruezo is scheduled to undergo tests on Thursday after suffering a leg injury in the second-half of the US national team’s 1-0 friendly win against Ecuador on Wednesday at FCD’s Toyota Stadium.

Gruezo started the match but was stretchered off the field just shy of the hour mark. Ecuador head coach Gustavo Quinteros provided an update on Gruezo’s status following Wednesday’s match, telling reporters it’s possible that he’ll have to replace the 21-year-old defensive midfielder on the country's Copa America roster.

“[I’m] worried for Gruezo because he did well, and we’re waiting,” he said. “They’re doing some tests on him now, and we’re hoping to repeat them tomorrow to see what happens. If it’s a muscle injury, we will have to replace him with another player.”

Gruezo was signed by Dallas to a Young Designated Player contract from Bundesliga club Stuttgart in January and has started 12 of Dallas’ 14 MLS matches this year. A member of Ecuador’s 2014 World Cup squad, Gruezo has 10 career senior international appearances.
