FRISCO, Texas -- Chivas USA put more shots on goal than FC Dallas for the game, contributing to Raul Fernandez’s man-of-the-match performance, but FCD had the more clear-cut scoring chances, especially early on in what would finish a 0-0 match.
And it is one of those early missed chances that left Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman visibly disappointed after the match.
The chance in question fell to team captain David Ferreira in the 8th minute. Collecting a cross from Zach Loyd, Ferreira found himself alone 10 yards from goal -- a rarity for one of the most fouled players in MLS -- but he put his shot high.
“That’s very uncharacteristic for David to put the ball over the goal like that,” Hyndman said. “He’s so good at putting the ball into the back of the net when he has the time, or at least putting it on frame. I think he’s really disappointed with himself for not putting that away. That was a clean-cut chance that he gets very seldom during the season.”
Had that chance gone differently, defender Matt Hedges suggested, the entire game -- and perhaps the result -- would have also gone differently.
“I think we had multiple good chances in the first 15 minutes,” Hedges said. “If we had finished those, it may have been two or three to zero, and then we can play our game for the rest of the game. We don’t, and they get back into the match.”
The mood in the Dallas locker room was subdued after the match -- one against a struggling side that they all believed they should've beaten -- and Ferreira left the stadium quickly without speaking to the media.
“I think he’s frustrated that we didn’t get the win tonight," Hyndman said. "He’s frustrated that we put so much time and energy into focusing on this game for the win and we didn’t get it."
