The goal that christened Audi Field and powered D.C. United to victory in the first match at their new home has also run away with the AT&T Goal of the Week prize for MLS Week 20.
Running on to an inviting square ball from Zoltan Stieber, Yamil Asad blasted a delightful dipping, curling first-time finish into the top corner of the goal at Audi Field’s south end, providing a worthy first-ever goal at the brand-new downtown venue and setting the tone for what would eventually become a comfortable 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
It was the eighth league goal of the year for the Argentinean winger, which draws him level with Darren Mattocks atop United’s team scoring chart.
Asad’s strike garnered 56 percent of the GOTW vote, easily outpacing the second-place finisher – which happens to be the final goal of that same game, an incredible solo effort from ‘Caps Homegrown phenom Alphonso Davies (28%).
Here’s how the rest of the pack finished up: David Accam at 7 percent, Marc Rzatkowski with 6 percent and Chris Pontius at 3 percent.
