DC United's Russell Canouse scores first goal of 2020 MLS season off corner kick

Russell Canouse celebrates - DC United - February 29, 2020

The first goal of the 2020 Major League Soccer season has arrived, and it came from an unexpected source.

D.C. United right back Russell Canouse broke the scoreless deadlock with a cool-as-you-like header in the 60th minute of Saturday’s home match against the Colorado Rapids. He latched onto a corner kick from Julian Gressel to make it 1-0, with strong winds carrying the cross past Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

Watch it below:

Canouse had scored just once for D.C. in 56 prior games, with his other tally coming in an Oct. 13, 2018 home win over FC Dallas. Meanwhile, it was Gressel contributing to his first Black-and-Red goal after arriving via trade from Atlanta United with 15 goals and 35 assists across three seasons.

There was a bit of a German connection on the play, since Gressel grew up in the European country before playing college soccer for Providence. As for Canouse, he signed with D.C. on Aug, 7, 2017 from Bundesliga side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
