D.C. United and US national team defender Steve Birnbaum’s name keeps popping up in connection with European clubs.
The latest team to be linked to Birnbaum? Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.
An Israeli report published on Thursday claimed that Birnbaum is in advanced negotiations with the club. The report noted that Birnbaum was previously in discussions with Maccabi Haifa, but that Tel Aviv has since jumped into discussions.
Birnbaum was linked earlier this year to German club Borussia Dortmund and Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, he has two goals and six assists in 54 career MLS appearances. He’s appeared in 11 regular season matches for D.C. in 2016.
The 25-year-old defender is currently with the US national team at the Copa America Centenario. He’s yet to appear in a game at the tournament for the US, who will wrap up Group A play against Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday night (7 pm ET; FS1, Univision, UDN).
