Add another serious injury to a D.C. United team already reeling with a host of long-term ailments.
Midfielder Felipe Martins suffered a torn ACL in his right knee Tuesday and will undergo reconstruction surgery on Friday, the club announced Wednesday morning.
Steve Goff of the Washington Post was the first to report the injury.
Felipe is expected to be sidelined for up to nine months as he rehabilitates from the injury and will be placed on the Season-Ending Injury List.
Felipe has been a regular starter for D.C. United since being acquired in a trade from the Vancouver Whitecaps last August. He had seven regular season starts this season with two assists.
Felipe joins midfielder Paul Arriola, who had ACL surgery in February, and Edison Flores, who will be out four to six weeks after having plastic surgery to repair multiple facial fractures.
Russell Canouse is also out with a hamstring injury, while central defenders Steve Birnbaum and Frederic Brillant, as well as outside back Chris Odoi-Atsem are listed as questionable ahead of the latest Atlantic Cup clash against the New York Red Bulls Wednesday (7:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, on DAZN in Canada) at Red Bull Arena. Oniel Fisher is also sidelined with an undisclosed injury.
