TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade
Columbus Crew SC have acquired midfielder Emmanuel Boateng from D.C. United in exchange for defender Axel Sjoberg, the clubs announced Friday.
Boateng, 26, has made 111 MLS appearances between 2016-20 since joining the LA Galaxy four years ago. He made only three appearances after being traded to D.C. last summer, all off the bench in 2019. The winger adds further options for Caleb Porter behind Luis Diaz, Younes Mokhtar and Pedro Santos.
“Emmanuel is a veteran, dynamic player who brings eight years of professional experience to our Club, and we are excited to welcome him to Columbus,” Crew president and GM Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “We believe Emmanuel’s speed on the flank and his familiarity with MLS makes him a valuable addition to our roster. We also want to thank Axel for his time with Crew SC, and we wish him the best in the next chapter of his career.”
Sjoberg, 29, has made 88 appearances in his MLS career, all with the Colorado Rapids between 2015-19. He joined the Crew this season, though is yet to debut. He adds depth to the United backline behind incumbant starters Steven Birnbaum and Frederic Brilliant.
“We are excited to add some important depth at center back ahead of the continuation of the MLS season,” said D.C. GM and VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper. “Axel is a physically imposing center back who was known for his consistency and steadiness during his time in Colorado and we’re looking forward to adding that experience and ability to our roster."
D.C. continue their season on Friday against FC Cincinnati while the Rapids resume against Real Salt Lake next Saturday.
