D.C. United on Saturday announced the acquisition of Peru national team forward Yordy Reyna and a 2020 international spot from the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for $400,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money.
Reyna will occupy an international slot on the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa, and completion of any mandatory quarantine period under local government and MLS health and safety protocol. He will join D.C. United for the remainder of the 2020 season, with the club holding the contract option for 2021.
Vancouver will receive additional compensation should D.C. pick up that option, and/or if D.C. transfer or trade Reyna while under their control.
“Acquiring Yordy Reyna from Vancouver has been on our radar for a while now,” D.C. GM Dave Kasper said in a statement. “In his three seasons in Major League Soccer, he has shown the quality and goal scoring ability to make a real impact in this league. He’s also joining us with a rich international soccer background after featuring regularly with the Peru national team. We are getting a true attacking talent and we look forward to him bolstering our attack as we push for a playoff spot in 2020.”
The move would see Reyna reunited with international teammate Edison Flores once Reyna has cleared said health and safety protocols and Flores has recovered from surgery to repair multiple facial fractures.
Reyna has spent portions of four seasons in Vancouver, making 77 MLS appearances while scoring 20 goals and contributing 17 assists. He has not started in five matches, however, a stretch that began when he was left out of coach Marc Dos Santos' squad entirely for violating team rules.
Internationally, Reyna has two goals in 29 appearances for Peru, and he made five appearances in the country's successful qualifying campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was not, however, part of the 23-man squad that traveled to Russia for the tournament.
