David Accam breaks drought with brace, assist vs. Columbus

David Accam - Philadelphia Union - March 23, 2019

Philadelphia Union fans have surely been wondering where this version of David Accam has been since he was acquired from the Chicago Fire via trade ahead of the 2018 season.

Accam, who scored once in 23 regular-season appearances last year, notched a first-half brace in a 3-0 Week 4 win over Columbus Crew SC.

The winger hadn’t recorded a league goal since a July 11, 2018 win over the Fire and it was his first multi-goal game since June 24, 2017 against Orlando City SC

The first goal in the 31st minute, as the Ghanaian was played through by Fafa Picault and slotted inside the far post. Then after some wayward Crew defending, Accam toe-poked home past Bendik in the 41st minute, giving his side a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. For good measure, he also added an assist, helping set up Ilsinho's strike in the 48th minute.

Accam’s celebration after his first strike was filled with emotion, almost as if a weight was lifted off his shoulders. After the match, it was revealed that Accam's father recently passed away.

Accam, one of the more-exciting attacking players in MLS while with Chicago, had 33 goals and 15 assists during his three seasons with the Fire.

This performance arrived at an opportune time, as Philadelphia’s attack was without Jamaican striker Cory Burke (international duty) and Mexican midfielder Marco Fabian (suspension).
