TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
D.C. United have signed Russell Canouse to a three-year contract extension, the club announced Thursday.
Canouse, 24, joined DCU in 2017 and has started 53 of his 57 appearances for the Black & Red, scoring a pair of goals, including the opener in the club's 2-1 season-opening defeat to the Colorado Rapids on February 29. He's now locked in with the club through 2023.
Prior to joining D.C. United, Canouse started his pro career with German reserve side TSG 1899 Hoffenhem II, where he netted one goal in 51 appearances. He also scored once in 20 appearances on loan for VfL Bochum in 2016-2017.
Canouse has proven to be a versatile piece, spending most of his time as a holding midfielder, but filling in at right back when necessary and showing a solid aptitude for the position. Since his 2017 team debut, he leads the club in tackles won with 101 and is second in interceptions with 102. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native was called into the US men's national team camp in January 2019, but has yet to garner a senior cap, although he did feature 15 times for the US U-20s.
