D.C. United continued their offseason roster makeover on Sunday afternoon with the re-signing of starting goalkeeper Steve Clark and the acquisition of Jamaican striker Darren Mattocks from the Portland Timbers.
Clark, a former Columbus Crew SC standout, arrived in D.C. from Denmark’s AC Horsens over the summer and played five matches for United. He's signed a one-year contract. Clark boasts 24 clean sheets in 112 career MLS matches and helped Crew SC reach the MLS Cup final in 2015.
“Since arriving with us, Steve has been a steady veteran presence in goal,” said D.C. general manager Dave Kasper in a club release. “We are excited that Steve will continue to play a role on this team both on the field and in the locker room.”
Mattocks arrives in the U.S. capital city via a trade that sent a 2018 international roster slot to Portland. As part of the transaction, United exercised his contract option for 2018.
The pacey Jamaican international and former Vancouver Whitecap scored four goals and two assists in 24 appearances for the Timbers this season, while also leading his national team on a run to the 2017 Gold Cup final with three goals in the tournament.
“We are thrilled to add an attacking player who unbalances opposing defenses with his speed, willingness to get into dangerous areas, and ability to score goals,” said Kasper. “We believe Darren's best football is ahead of him as he enters the prime of his career, and we welcome him to the Black-and-Red.”
