Columbus Crew SC’s Zack Steffen was named the 2018 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year on Tuesday, capping a breakout 2018 for the US national team 'keeper.
Steffen announced himself on the national stage during the 2017 playoffs after playing the role of hero in Crew SC's penalty shootout win over Atlanta United. He's since followed that up by leading Columbus back to the playoffs, before starring in another shootout Knockout Round win.
The 23-year-old had a 1.28 GAA with a 64.1 save percentage during the MLS regular season while anchoring a defense that conceded 45 goals, top third in the league. Steffen was third in the league in clean sheets (10) despite missing five games.
Steffen is the second player in Crew SC history to win the award after Brad Friedel picked up the honor in 1997.
Steffen narrowly edged Seattle's Stefan Frei, Red Bulls' Luis Robles and Sporting KC's Tim Melia, last year's Goalkeeper of the Year winner. Below are the full voting results.
