TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Transfer
Columbus Crew SC have acquired Costa Rican winger Luis Diaz from Herediano as a Young Designated Player, the club announced Tuesday. According to Jacob Myers of the Columbus Dispatch, the Crew paid a transfer fee of $1 million.
Diaz, 20, has made 66 appearances in the Costa Rican top flight in his young career, with three goals and eight assists.
“Luis is a young, dynamic player who is already making a name for himself despite his young age and we are excited to welcome him to Crew SC,” club president Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “As one of the most promising talents in Costa Rica, we know he will continue to develop at our Club and we believe his skillset will allow him to be successful in MLS. The addition of Luis strengthens our team as we continue to build our roster.”
Diaz was named the 2019 Best Under-21 Player in the Tornea Clausura and was a finalist for the Best Player award. With Herediano, he started both Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 games against Atlanta United.
He will officially be added to the Crew's roster when the Secondary Transfer Window opens next week, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa. He will occupy an international roster slot.
