TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Columbus Crew SC have signed former Colorado Rapids defender Axel Sjoberg from the Waiver List, the club announced Wednesday. Sjoberg was placed on waivers by the Rapids last week.
Sjoberg, 28, made 88 appearances across five seasons with Colorado, though fell out of favor in 2019, getting on the field on just seven occasions. The towering defender was named to 2016 MLS Best XI.
“We are pleased to welcome Axel Sjoberg to Columbus Crew SC,” Crew GM and president Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. “Axel is a defender whose significant experience in MLS makes him a valuable addition to our roster. We look forward to incorporating him into the team and are excited to begin working with him.”
The Crew recently traded defender Lalas Abubakar to the Rapids. Sjoberg joins the likes of Jonathan Mensah, Aboubacar Keita and others on the Crew's depth chart in central defense.
