TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
Columbus Crew SC and forward Gyasi Zardes have agreed to a multiyear contract extension that will make the US international striker a Designated Player, the club announced Monday.
Zardes, 27, was named 2018 MLS Comeback Player of the Year after scoring a career-high 19 goals in his first season with the Crew. The prior year, his final with the LA Galaxy, Zardes scored just twice.
“We’re thrilled that Gyasi has agreed to be a part of this team for the foreseeable future, as it shows his commitment to our club and to our community,” Crew SC President Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. “Gyasi is a player who truly understands the culture of the Columbus Crew and whose work ethic is second to none. Over the last two seasons, Gyasi‘s production as the top American goal-scorer in MLS is commendable and so we are pleased that we were able to reach this multi-year extension that reflects how pivotal he is to our continued success.”
This season, the striker has four goals and one assist in 12 appearances, all starts, for new boss Caleb Porter. In his MLS career, he has 57 goals and 18 assists in 176 appearances between the Crew and Galaxy.
