TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
The Colorado Rapids and center back Lalas Abubakar have agreed to a new contract, the club announced Tuesday. The deal runs through 2024 with a team option for 2025.
Abubakar, who turns 26 later this month, originally joined Colorado on loan in 2019 before the club acquired him permanently last offseason. The defender has been a constant on the backline for the club, starting 39 games over the last two years.
“We’re delighted to secure Lalas’ future in Burgundy,” Rapids EVP & GM Padraig Smith said in a club statement. “Lalas has been an integral part of our defense during his two seasons with the club and we look forward to seeing him anchor our backline for several years to come.”
Abubakar is the latest player to sign a new contract with the Rapids, following the likes of Drew Moor, Steven Beitashour, Clint Irwin, Danny Wilson and Collen Warner. Colorado announced their end-of-season contract decisions on Monday and retained the majority of their 2020 squad.
