The Colorado Rapids on Wednesday announced that one of their players tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, June 23.
The result was received following a round of mandatory club testing as part of Major League Soccer’s full-team training protocols and confirmed via a subsequent secondary test. No additional Rapids players or staff received a positive result.
The Rapids said in a team release that in response to the positive test, their medical staff is working directly with local infectious disease specialists to treat the player, who is asymptomatic, feeling well and observing isolation protocols.
The positive test result has also immediately set in motion the club’s health and safety protocols designed for the possibility of such an event: all players and team personnel were immediately notified of the positive result and asked to isolate, training has been temporarily suspended while additional testing takes place and the club has begun extensive contact tracing, among other protocols.
The positive test for the Rapids player follows three other recent positive results within the last week: Atlanta United announced positive tests on June 18 and 19, while Inter Miami also announced on June 19 that they had a player test positive. Prior to that, the other MLS clubs recently announcing positive tests include D.C. United (June 13), FC Dallas (June 3) and the Philadelphia Union (April 1), with Kacper Przybylko revealing he was the Union player to contract COVID-19. NYCFC announced on March 19 that a member of the club's sporting department tested positive.
