TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade
The Colorado Rapids have acquired US national team winger Jonathan Lewis from NYCFC in exchange for $650,000 in Targeted Allocation Money and a 2020 international roster slot, the clubs announced Wednesday.
Lewis, 21, made just six starts for NYCFC since being drafted No. 3 overall in the 2017 SuperDraft. This season, he made six appearances (two starts) with one assist.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jonathan to Colorado,” Rapids general manager Padraig Smith said in a club statement. “He is one of the best young attacking talents in the United States, a dynamic game changer with the potential to develop into an elite level attacker in MLS. His age, character and skillset fit perfectly with the type of player we want to bring to Colorado and with the plans we have for the future of our club."
With Alexandru Mitrita, Maxi Moralez, Jesus Medina and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi on the depth chart, Lewis was surplus to requirements. He joins a Rapids club bottom of the league and winless in 2019, having parted ways with head coach Anthony Hudson last week.
The Rapids are next in action on Saturday against Real Salt Lake (9 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, DAZN in Canada).
