Club America have dismissed Miguel Herrera as manager, the Liga MX club announced Monday.
The development came two days after Las Aguilas were eliminated by LAFC in the Concacaf Champions League semifinals, losing 3-1 after holding a one-nil lead at halftime and being up a man following Eduard Atuesta’s red card.
One round earlier in the CCL quarterfinals, they lost 1-0 to Atlanta United in Leg 2 but were buoyed by a 3-0 aggregate lead from Leg 1. Club America also lost 3-1 on aggregate against C.D. Guadalajara this past November in the Torneo Guardianes 2020 quarterfinals.
The same CCL game included Herrera being sent off at halftime after an altercation with LAFC assistant coach Ante Razov. Piojo then spent the game’s second half in the stands communicating via walkie talkie, resulting in a viral social media moment.
Herrera, 52, had led Club America since the 2017 season. It was his second stint with the club after leading Mexico at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and to the 2015 Concacaf Gold Cup title. He won the 2013 Clausura and 2018 Apertura titles at Club America, as well as the Clausura 2019 Copa MX.
A former defender for Mexico’s national team, Herrera has been linked to MLS managerial openings in seasons past. However, his entire playing and coaching career has been spent in his home country.
