In a match featuring two historically productive forwards, Chris Wondolowski struck the first blow with his 151st career MLS goal to give the San Jose Earthquakes an early over Wayne Rooney's D.C. United on Saturday night.
Following a promising opening half-hour for the Quakes, Wondolowski headed in Nick Lima's cross in the 37th minute to give the visitors a deserved lead and build on his MLS-leading career tally.
Luciano Acosta later leveled affairs in what finished a 1-1 draw at Audi Field.
The 36-year-old Wondolowski, in his 15th MLS season, has now scored the last seven San Jose goals. That has him just one goal back of a three-way tie for third on the MLS goal scoring chart, a tie that includes D.C.'s Rooney.
Before arriving in MLS, Rooney scored 208 goals in the English Premier League, good for second all-time in that competition behind Alan Shearer, who scored 260.
