The summer of discontent continued for the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night as a winless streak stretched to 11 games following a 2-0 loss to the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo and there were plenty of rumblings surrounding embattled coach Mikael Stahre.
It included a heated exchange with Fatai Alashe when the midfielder was subbed off at the start of the second half after coming on for Anibal Godoy in the 41st minute.
That comes on the heels of midfielder Florian Jungwirth telling Quakes Epicenter that his team doesn’t “have the quality to compete with most of the teams in this league,” with former San Jose defender Jordan Stewart calling those comments “ridiculous” in a tweet.
And there was ample continued criticism on social media from frustrated Quakes fans who have used the hashtag #Stahreout to express their desire for a coaching change with San Jose sitting last in the league with 12 points from 19 matches.
However, Chris Wondolowski took to Twitter last night to defend his coach, using his own hashtags.
The Quakes captain echoed those sentiments in his post-match comments.
“When you are not winning it is trying times, but I definitely have faith in this locker room and each player,” Wondo said. “I think the belief hasn’t wavered, which I think is our best attribute right now. At times you could waver and lose faith, but I think all the guys are all in chime in believing, and it is just execution now.”
