A bevy of question marks surround Chivas USA following their change in ownership, but new club president Nelson Rodriguez knows he wants promising forward Erick “Cubo” Torres to be a part of the organization’s future regardless of what’s to come in the transitional phase.
Rodriguez said the decision to extend Torres’ loan from CD Guadalajara would ultimately be made by first-year head coach Wilmer Cabrera. The club has the authority to make decisions at a local level despite the league’s momentary control, Rodriguez added.
Torres, the 21-year-old native of Guadalajara, scored seven goals in 15 matches as a rookie in 2013, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dynamic youngsters. The Goats’ loan for Torres ends in June.
“At the moment, Torres is on loan and we have the option of extending that loan,” Rodriguez told reporters in a teleconference Monday. “We have time to make that decision. He’s a key player for this club – a goalscorer. He’s a great player and we hope to keep him, but that decision will ultimately be made by Wilmer Cabrera.”
Rodriguez expects Cabrera to look to extend that loan beyond the deadline, especially if Chivas USA make waves in the first three months of the season.

Torres, along with offseason acquisitions Mauro Rosales and Adolfo Bautista, open the season Sunday at StubHub Center against the Chicago Fire (3 pm ET, UniMas).
And in contrast to the team's approach in 2013, Rodriguez said the current front office would be looking at all options in stocking the roster.
“Not only will we look at Guadalajara, but the entire world to reinforce and replenish the roster,” Rodriguez said. “We will scour the Earth for all players that want to wear our colors and help improve our team.”
