After a winding path that went through Germany, Serbia and a small town in Maine, 20-year-old midfielder Matt Dunn signed with Chivas USA on Thursday via an MLS Waiver Draft, the club's second addition in four days. Chivas USA had signed defender Michael Nwiloh, the club's fourth-round draft pick out of Georgia State University, on Monday.
Dunn (pictured above) captained the United States (under current Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera) at the 2011 U-17 World Cup in Mexico, where Dunn played in all four games and led the US to the second round, where they lost to Germany. That squad included current MLS players Kellyn Acosta, Jack McBean and Dillon Serna and other foreign-based players such as Paul Arriola and Alejandro Guido (Tijuana) and Marc Pelosi (Liverpool).
From Dallas, Dunn was in the youth system of German club Cologne at the time, and he later signed a professional contract with Serbian club OFK Beograd in 2012 (read MLSsoccer.com's coverage at the time). But Dunn returned to the United States last summer, enrolling at the University of Maine-Fort Kent, whose athletic programs compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Dunn appeared in 17 games for the Bengals last fall, posting seven goals and 10 assists.
Nwiloh, born in Hackensack, N.J., but raised in Conyers, Ga., was drafted after a successful career at Georgia State University, where he earned second team all-South region honors from the NSCAA in 2013. Both players are available for selection when Chivas USA host the Seattle Sounders on Saturday (10:30 pm ET, MLS Live).
