The latest edition of the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week featured two global stars, two Designated Players and four internationals with sterling reputations both in MLS and beyond.
None of them won.
That’s because the dazzling volley by Chicago FireHomegrown PlayerDjordje Mihailovic took top honors in a rout, racking up 53 percent of the vote to render superstars Sebastian Giovinco and Zlatan Ibrahimovic mere GOTW also-rans.
Mihailovic’s jaw-dropping strike in the Fire's 3-1 upset of LAFC was followed by Zlatan in a distant second (18 percent), while Giovinco finished in a tie for third place with LAFC’s Uruguayan DP Diego Rossi (13 percent each) and New York City FC’s Finnish national teamer Alex Ring came in last (3 percent).
The Week 31 winner was Mihailovic’s first goal of the season, which didn’t begin for him until August due to his recovery from a serious knee injury suffered in the Knockout Round of last year’s Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The 19-year-old U.S. youth international has already notched a goal and three assists in his six appearances this season, providing a bright spot amid a dispiriting 2018 for the Fire.
Mihailovic and Chicago return to match action on Sunday with their first-ever visit to Audi Field to face D.C. United in front of a national-television audience (1 pm ET | ESPN – Full TV and streaming info).
