After successful trial during preseason the Chicago Fire added veteran goalkeeper Matt Lampson on Friday. The 26-year-old signed a one-year deal with a club option through the second year.
Lampson signed his initial professional contract with Columbus Crew SC on December 15, 2011 after a standout collegiate career at Ohio State University. He made his MLS debut on August 25, 2012, when he entered in the second half of a 4-3 victory over the New England Revolution.
In 2013, Lampson started all 13 MLS matches in which he appeared, tallying 43 saves en route to a 1.38 GAA and five shutouts.
"Matt has proven himself as a winning goalkeeper in MLS," said Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez in a club release. "His character, work ethic and resiliency are all important additions to our team and reflective of what our club values."
A native of Hilliard, Ohio, Lampson was loaned to USL sides Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Charlotte Independence in 2015, where he appeared in seven total matches.
Lampson appears to have won the job over Matt Bersano and Callum Irving, who were also in training camp as trialists. He will now compete with Patrick McLain for the backup job behind Sean Johnson.
