With excitement at its highest pitch in recent memory, Canada have high expectations in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and John Herdman’s group opens the tournament Saturday at the historic Rose Bowl taking on Martinique.
The teams squared off against each other, in the same venue, to open the 2013 Gold Cup and Fabrice Reuperne scored the dramatic winner for Martinique in second-half stoppage time.
Canada
One of three teams to be crowned Gold Cup champions, winning the tournament in 2000, Canada qualified for a 14th time with a second-place finish in the Concacaf Nations League qualifiers, winning all four of their matches with a +17 goal differential.
Les Rouges reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 Gold Cup, losing to eventual finalist Jamaica, 2-1. In a closed-door training match on June 10, Canada defeated Trinidad & Tobago, 2-0, at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal-State Fullerton. Scott Arfield struck for a brace.
Martinique
Martinique are competing in their sixth Gold Cup and like Canada, Les Matinino went 4-0-0 during Concacaf Nations League qualifying, clinching their Gold Cup berth with a third-place finish.
Martinique, which are 3W-9L-2D all-time in the Gold Cup, had their best performance in the tournament in 2002 when they reached the quarterfinals where they were eliminated by Canada on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw.
