Canada may be heading out of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, but they'll be doing so on a high note after defeating Suriname 2-0 in their final Group B game.
A team composed mostly of players in the Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact youth programs proved too much for the Surinamese side, which was still alive looking to make a surprise appearance in the second round.
One of the few non-MLS affiliated players in the squad, forward Jonathan David of Ottawa Internationals SC, netted both goals for the young Canadians on either side of halftime.
David got the scoring started in the 13th minute, combining with Whitecaps Academy left back Jake Ruby before dribbling past the last defender and the goalkeeper to leave himself with an easy finish.
The second goal came right at the 55-minute mark, when David collected a loose ball just outside the area, drove between two defenders and unleashed a shot that left Suriname's goalkeeper no chance.
Though both teams have now been eliminated, the result means that Cuba will likely join the United States and Honduras in Group D of the tournament's second stage, barring an upset win by the Cubans over Costa Rica in the Friday night finale. The US have already qualified as the first-placed team in their group, and will face El Salvador on Saturday in their final group match of the first round.
Canada, for their part, will miss their second consecutive U-17 World Cup after qualifying in both 2011 and 2013.
