After Bayern Munich wrapped up the Bundesliga title on Tuesday, there were more MLS, US and Canadian exports involved as Matchday 32 came to a close on Wednesday. Here's a rundown of how the third-to-last round of games went down.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2, Schalke 1
Weston McKennie scored his second goal in three weeks, but Schalke 04 continued their second-half slide with a 2-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday. The US national team midfielder and former FC Dallas academy product has now scored three of Schalke's last five goals, but his side have not won in the league since a January victory that opened their return from the winter break.
Fellow American international Timothy Chandler came on inside the final 10 minutes to help host Frankfurt see out the win.
RB Leipzig 2, Fortuna Dusseldorf 2
Former New York Red Bulls breakout Homegrown Player signing Tyler Adams made another in his more natural No. 6 position for RB Leipzig, going the full 90 minutes in a disappointing 2-2 home draw to Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday.
After Chelsea-bound Timo Werner scored to double Leipzig's lead, the hosts conceded twice inside the final five minutes to settle for one point, wasting a chance to move closer to second-place Dortmund.
Fellow capped USMNT representative Alfredo Morales went against Adams in midfield for Dusseldorf, but was subbed off shortly before Dusseldorf's fightback began.
US national team No. 1 and former Columbus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen remained out injured for Dusseldorf.
Borussia Dortmund 0, Mainz 2
A day after officially being eliminated from the Bundesliga title chase, Dortmund played like a disinterested side in a surprising 2-0 home loss to a Mainz club Wednesday fighting for its Bundesliga lives.
New York City FC academy product and US youth international Giovanni Reyna missed the match for Dortmund with illness. An initial COVID-19 test came back negative, according to the German outlet Bild.
Werder Bremen 0, Bayern Munich 1
Bayern Munich are Bundesliga champions once again, wrapping up their eighth straight league title with Tuesday's 1-0 win over Werder Bremen.
Unsurprisingly, it was Robert Lewandowski who provided what turned out to the league-clinching goal, sneaking in behind the Bremen back line unmarked and making no mistake with his finish to the far post. Watch it below.
That means former Vancouver Whitecaps Homegrown Alphonso Davies already has a league championship to his name at the ripe age of 19. The left back prodigy, who has exploded onto the world stage this Bundesliga campaign, emerged as a key contributor throughout Bayern's stretch run with a series of electric performances.
While he's been on a torrid run of form of late, it wasn't the best of days for Davies on Tuesday, as he wound up getting sent off for a low tackle in the 79th minute. On the flip side, the match also saw him find another milestone moment in his young career, as he set a league record when he was clocked at a sprint speed of 36.5 km/h.
Notably, FC Dallas academy product Chris Richards made his first appearance on the bench for Bayern. The 20-year-old defender was transferred to the German powerhouse in Jan. 2019 for a reported fee of $1.25 million. He has been competing with the reserve side for much of the 2019-20 season.
US men's national team forward Josh Sargent made a second-half cameo for Bremen, subbing on for Leonardo Bittencourt in the 62nd minute and finishing out the contest.
Borussia Mönchengladbach 3, Wolfsburg 0
Needing all three points to stay in the race for the all-important fourth spot with Bayer Leverkusen, it was mission accomplished for Borussia Mönchengladbach, which cruised to a 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg despite playing without three of their top five goal-scorers.
Jonas Hoffman netted a brace to pace Mönchengladbach, scoring in the 10th and 30th minutes, before Lars Stindl rounded off the scoring in the 65th. It was a tough day for the Wolfsburg back line, but USMNT defender John Anthony Brooks resumed his starting role in central defense as he started and went all 90 minutes -- which he's done in every Wolfsburg match but one since the league's return.
