Bermuda hope to end their first-ever Concacaf Gold Cup with a first-ever win when they meet Nicaragua in a battle of already eliminated Group B teams at Red Bull Arena Monday night.
The teams last met in 2004, splitting four international friendlies from March 31 to May 2.
Bermuda
For a second straight game Bermuda battled valiantly, but again fell up short, losing to powerhouse Costa Rica, 2-1, at Toyota Stadium Thursday night.
Mayron George opened the scoring for the Ticos with his first international goal on the half-hour mark and Elias Aguilar doubled the lead in the 54th minute. The Gombey Warriors kept fighting and cut their deficit in half on a Nahki Wells penalty kick five minutes later. Dale Eve made seven saves to keep Bermuda in the game, but an equalizer was not in the cards and Bermuda were eliminated from advancing with one match to play.
Nicaragua
Bermuda aren't the only team seeking a first-ever Gold Cup win. Nicaragua have dropped all eight of their matches in the Gold Cup and were eliminated from advancing to the quarterfinals after a 2-0 defeat to Haiti in Frisco.
Haiti struck first in the 22nd minute on a deflected strike by Steeven Saba and made it 2-0 12 minutes later on an own goal by Manuel Rosas after New York Red Bulls midfielder Derrick Etienne did all the work in the box to put a shot toward the net.
