Atlanta United confirmed Carleton's loan to Indy Eleven on Friday.
“We believe it is time for Andrew to challenge himself in a new environment,” said Atlanta United VP and technical director Carlos Bocanegra in a statement. “We remain optimistic about his future and are looking forward to seeing what he will accomplish with Indy.”

Atlanta United playmaker Andrew Carleton could be heading out on loan for the 2020 season, according to Doug Roberson of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A deal has yet to be finalized, a club official confirmed.
Carleton, 19, was the Five Stripes' first Homegrown signing and has since accrued 229 minutes across 11 appearances (two starts) in his first three MLS seasons. He’s also featured in six U.S. Open Cup matches, with one goal and two assists across all competitions.
A longtime US youth international, Carleton’s best moments have come on loan at USL Championship clubs Atlanta United 2 and Charleston Battery. He has seven goals and four assists in 29 appearances for Atlanta’s second team.
The 2019 season was ripe with controversy for Carleton, with manager Frank de Boer noting that the youngster needs “to grow up” off the field. Last June, Carlteon also missed an Atlanta match against Toronto FC after forgetting his passport.
“He is young and there are a lot of things that you think, ‘hey, that’s tempting to do,’ distractions,” said de Boer. “Those kind of things, you see it everywhere. Because he’s an Atlanta United first-team player, you get a lot of attention. But you have to resist it sometimes. I think he can do better in that, and he understands that. It goes like this and I think if he does that, he’s going to make a major step forward.”
Carleton featured at No. 19 on the 2018 version of MLS’s 22 Under 22 list, but has since fallen out of favor.
