Atlanta United announced on Tuesday night that they have signed veteran defender Sal Zizzo via MLS free agency.
The 30-year-old fullback joins Atlanta after three seasons with the New York Red Bulls, where he recorded six assists in 73 regular season appearances. He had two assists in 23 matches and 18 starts in 2017.
“We know Sal had options this offseason and we’re happy he has chosen to sign with our club,” Atlanta VP and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a statement. “He’s a defender who we’ve seen play in a similar high-tempo style with the New York Red Bulls and we expect him to come in and compete on our backline.”
Zizzo has been in MLS since 2010, and has 162 career regular season appearances across his stints with New York, Sporting Kansas City, Portland Timbers and Chivas USA. The San Diego native spent three years in Germany with Hannover 96 before returning to North America to sign with MLS.
