Jeff Larentowicz's next MLS stop is in the American South.
Atlanta United announced on Wednesday they have signed Larentowicz. The 33-year-old was a free agent, having played for the LA Galaxy for the 2016 season.
“We’re pleased that a player of Jeff’s quality and experience chose to sign with our club through free agency,” Atlanta United president Darren Eales said in a team statement. “It’s important for us to find the proper balance between up-and-coming talent and experienced league players, and we feel Jeff will fill a valuable role for us."
Larentowicz brings 12 years of MLS experience to the 2017 expansion side. Originally drafted by the New England Revolution, the midfielder, who has also spent time in his career as a central defender, played five seasons in New England before moving to the Colorado Rapids, where he won MLS Cup in 2010. After three seasons with the Rapids, he was traded to the Chicago Fire, where he played and served as captain 2013-15, before becoming part of the first MLS free agent class last offseason and joining the Galaxy for a season.
Larentowicz has made 324 MLS regular season appearances to date, and currently sits in 11th place all-time in minutes played in the league.
“Jeff gives us another dimension because of his natural passing and possession abilities,” Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra said. “His experience and leadership will be invaluable for our younger players, and he’s capable of making a big impact on the field. He’s proven to be a winner throughout his entire career.”
