TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed
Atlanta United have re-signed forward Erick "Cubo" Torres, the club announced Wednesday. Torres will also take a direct role with academy players and staff.
Torres, 28, joined Atlanta during 2020 after star forward Josef Martinez went down with a torn ACL. Torres had a goal and assist in 13 appearances (four starts) after arriving.
“Cubo has been a positive influence on our organization and we’re pleased he has chosen to re-sign with the club,” Atlanta VP & Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club statement. “While he provides competition to our group of forwards, he’s a veteran presence who understands the league and has shown a willingness to mentor our younger players.”
Prior to joining Atlanta, Torres was out of contract after spending the previous two seasons in Liga MX. An MLS veteran, he joined Chivas USA in 2013 and spent a number of successful seasons in MLS between Chivas and the Houston Dynamo, scoring 36 goals in 93 appearances.
The move adds another option up top for new coach Gabriel Heinze. With Martinez healthy again, the club also added Argentine Lisandro Lopez. Academy products Jackson Conway and Tyler Wolff are also in the mix as well as Paraguayan attacker Erik Lopez.
