Before arriving at Toronto FC, Auro almost wound up going to La Liga

In convincing Brazilian fullback Auro to join Toronto FC, the defending MLS Cup champions beat out stiff competition that included an offer from a La Liga side, writes Kurt Larson of the Toronto Sun.

Toronto's newest signing revealed that top-flight Leganes were among the teams in Spain and Portugal bidding for the 22-year-old's services. Instead, the product of Brazilian giants São Paulo chose a path he believes more of his compatriots will follow.

“Some of the young boys in Brazil know this league will be the best in the world in the future,” Auro told The Sun through a translator.

"I really like this team. It’s a really skillful team,” he added. “I enjoyed training. I hope for TFC to have a better season this year than last year, if it’s possible.”

Auro also enjoyed his first match with his new club Tuesday, playing 78 minutes in a 2-0 CONCACAF Champions League victory over the Colorado Rapids.

And there's one more interesting twist: you might be surprised to learn who gave Toronto a glowing recommendation. Read more about it in The Sun.
